Desiree F. Magsombol JD (she/her)

is a Certified Facilitator of The Resilience Toolkit and a TRE (Tension/Trauma Release Exercise) Provider. Working with, living in, and being a part of communities with high levels of stress and trauma and limited access to mainstream tools, Desiree is committed to making multi-modality tools of resilience accessible to all individuals, organizations, and communities.

Desiree began her advocacy career as a law clerk at Legal Services for Prisoners with Children, where she worked with survivors of domestic and sexual violence who were incarcerated for felonies involving their perpetrators. Her individual experiences with violence, passion for anti-violence work, and love for community led her to advocacy work with foster youth in residential care, LGBTQ survivors of domestic violence, and survivors of sexual violence in prisons and jails throughout the country. For five years, she provided training and technical assistance. She developed policy, protocol, and programming for prison, jail, juvenile facilities, and sexual assault agency staff across the US to address sexual abuse behind bars.  The following year she served as a Field-Initiated Training and Technical Assistance Provider for the National Prison Rape Elimination Act(PREA) Resource Center with Impact Justice.

Desiree supported the staff at Rosebud Sioux Tribe’s Wanbli Wiconi Tipi Juvenile Detention Center in Rosebud, SD, with their Bureau of Justice Assistance PREA Implementation model project. She co-facilitated stakeholder discussion groups to inform training, programming, and a detailed partnership with White Buffalo Calf Women’s Society, IHS, and Tribal law enforcement,  for trauma-informed victim services, and drafted  JDC’s PREA policy.

At Lumos, Desiree creates space for individual and organizational clients to share their processes, explore their needs, and co-create partnerships so they can accomplish their goals in supportive and sustainable ways. Desiree facilitates community workshops and provides consultation, subject matter expertise, training, program design, delivery, and management for organizational clients about growing embodied resilience, stress and burnout management, and trauma-informed approaches. Desiree co-developed curriculum, program managed, and co-facilitated the eTIRO training for Los Angeles County’s Department of Public Health’s COVID-19 Outreach for Community Health Workers and a Department of Mental Health project to grow resilience for Muslim women in the South Bay of Los Angeles.

Desiree spends her free time supporting the open door culture of Masjid Al-Shareef in Long Beach, the participants in the  Birthworkers of Color Collective Mentorship program, and growing her knowledge about conflict resolution through various training and, most recently, volunteering in a mediation program in the Orange County courts.

She loves making up stories with her little one, savoring the scents of the beach and eucalyptus trees, and spending time with loved ones.

Thank you so much to Desiree for the course. It was honestly beyond my expectations and I'm feeling excited to learn more.

Genevieve TurnerIntro to The Resilience Toolkit

I feel so grateful for the acceptance on the course and the learning to understand and recognize the particularities of my stress and trauma response.

Claudia ReyesIntro to The Resilience Toolkit

I thought Desiree was clear, fun, engaging and really connected to the content. I thought they gave really good examples to demonstrate some things and I thought the way the space was set up really encouraged a feeling of safety.
