What Disabled Embodiment Reveals About Somatic Trauma Healing – July 19th 9:00am PST

What would somatic trauma healing look like if variation were expected and foundational rather than exceptional and accommodated?
Much of somatic trauma healing has been shaped by assumptions about regulation, embodiment, and recovery that emerge from relatively narrow experiences of human bodies. Disabled and chronically ill embodiment challenges those assumptions. Symptoms may persist even as agency, discernment, coherence, and self-trust deepen.
Rather than treating disability as an exception to existing models, this experiential session invites participants to consider what disabled embodiment makes visible about healing itself. Through disabled narratives, embodied practice, and shared reflection, we’ll examine how assumptions about participation, pacing, regulation, and embodiment are often reproduced without our awareness, even in spaces committed to care and liberation.
Together we’ll explore what becomes possible when variation is treated as foundational rather than exceptional, and disabled embodiment is recognized not as an exception to somatic trauma healing, but as a source of knowledge capable of reshaping the field itself.
This session is facilitated by Nkem Ndefo (she/they). Nkem is foremost an alchemist and also a disabled Black midwife, facilitator, coach, and strategist. They are the founder of Lumos Transforms and creator of the Resilience Toolkit, vehicles for healing and liberatory change across borders and at all scales.
Offered in English, ASL, and Zoom closed captions.
Sunday, July 19th | 9:00 – 10:15am PST
