Grief Gathering for Dr. Jason Arday

September 15 @ 10:00 am - 11:30 am PDT

On 14 August, 2026, Dr. Jason Arday, a sociologist, educator, and the youngest Black professor in Cambridge history, died after weeks of relentless public scrutiny and a campaign of racist abuse. Many of us in the Lumos community are grieving – some who have known Dr. Arday personally or through his work, some who have followed his story, and all who are carrying the grief and anger of bearing witness to yet another Black life taken by institutional harm.

Please join us on Tuesday, 15 September from 10-11:30 am PT| 1-2:30 pm ET | 6-7:30 pm BST

for a virtual gathering to be in community, grieve together, and tend to all that the loss of Dr. Jason Arday has stirred in each of us. As we gather, we want to gently remind you that there is no right way to grieve, and no right way to show up to grieve. You are welcome to engage in any way that feels best for you.

There will be space for a sharing circle and a candle vigil. If you would like, you are welcome to bring a candle for this ritual. We will also have a collective virtual altar, for which you may bring an object, image, word, or memory that feels meaningful to you.

Please note that to create a container of greater safety, no one will be admitted into the space after the opening is complete, which will be approximately 10 minutes into the session.

In this Grief Gathering, we will be engaging with practices from The GEN Grief Toolkit by Camille Sapara Barton, which you can view and download here: https://global-diversity.org/grief-toolkit/.
