Community Chat with Rebecca Weiker
February 11 @ 12:00 pm - 12:45 pm PST

Rebecca Weiker (she/her), MPH, is a restorative justice practitioner and leader with over three decades of experience addressing and preventing the harms of trauma and violence. Her work is deeply personal; the murder of her beloved sister Wendy in 1992 fuels her commitment to creating opportunities for transformation and healing for everyone impacted by violence, including victims and those responsible for harm. For more than fifteen years Rebecca has been working to transform the criminal justice system through direct work with people impacted by violence and incarceration. She first became involved in the field in 2008 working to organize survivors and the families of incarcerated people serving life without parole for crimes they committed as juveniles in order to pass a series of laws (SB9, SB260, SB 261, AB1308 and SB394) that gave second chances to youth sentenced to extreme sentences in California. As a Restorative Justice Facilitator and Trainer since 2016, she has worked with survivors and people responsible for harm facilitating Victim Offender Dialogues (VODs) and other restorative processes, offering training, mentorship, and consultation to develop these practices. From 2018 to 2021, Rebecca served as the VOD Program Manager at Restore Justice, where she developed programs for survivors, responsible parties, and formerly incarcerated individuals. As Program Director at Healing Dialogue and Action from 2015 to 2018, she implemented restorative justice curriculum at California State Prison, Los Angeles County, and was a founding member of the organization in 2011.Co-Founding The Mend Collaborative with Miguel Quezada has allowed Rebecca to co-create an organization that is grounded in and exemplifies her values. Mend is a partnership by and for people impacted by violence and incarceration, focused on responding in ways that the criminal legal system cannot to create transformational change and healing.
